Mr. Douglass- Artistic Director/ Co-Founder, is a playwright and lyricist, having written the award winning Musical Play "De Obeah Mon", and he is the recipient of two coveted NAACP Theatre Awards for excellence in Musical theatre writing and production, in Los Angeles. He is in the midst of a major undertaking to write six new plays for the American Theatre including three musicals, of which "De Obeah Mon," was the first -- the second play, "I'll Second That Emotion", was done in a series of readings at Frank Silvera's writer's workshop, NYC; the third effort, "Springtime in Alaska" with music and lyrics by the award winning writer, Ms. Micki Grant. This musical was produced in workshop in Manhattan to rave response. "Marie LaVeaux, Voo-Doo Queen of New Orleans" is his third musical in the series, and is currently in re-writes and development by the Lehman Engle Musical Theatre Workshop, Los Angeles. He last two plays in the series will be original Twenty-first Century comedies as yet untitled.
Mr. Douglass has just finished writing an original Television sit-com called "Mummy and the Ghost" Mr. Douglass is currently working on and original idea for a TV mini-series dealing with the intriguing world of International smuggling and it's strange bedfellows.
Mr. Douglass is the writer and creator of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Gospel Songfest, now in it's sixth year of operation. The scripts have all been musical theatre pieces created for a very progressive and contemporary Gospel and theatre going audience. Mr. Douglass has also written a trilogy of plays as musical adaptations of various bible stories. The first in the trilogy was "976 LORD, A Call To Healing"
The second is "And Christmas to Watts Too” the last in the series is "The Seven Last Words In Watts".
These plays are soon to be published in the United States and Canada later this year.
As an actor, director Mr. Douglass has credits too numerous to list here. Among them he lists: co-starring in an award winning musical opposite the legendary Ms. Lena Horne in the International tour of her one woman show, "Lena Horne...The Lady and Her Music". He also toured with Lauren Bacall in "Sweet Bird of Youth”, "Annie Warbucks", and he appeared in the LA Workshop Production of "To Sir With Love." starring Stephanie Mills. Mr. Douglass is currently directing for the Lehman Engle Musical Theatre Workshop and has aspirations to direct for television as well. On television, Mr. Douglass originated the role of "Haskell" in "Star Trek...The Next Generation", Guest Star appearances on other series such as "Falcon Crest", "Nurse”, and "The Antagonist" to “High Incident” name a few.
After completing a full 22 week season as Artistic Director at P.A.L.E.F., where he wrote and directed their productions, Mr. Douglass performed the role of “Daddy Brubeck” Fall 1997 at the Santa Barbara Civic Light Opera company, to rave response. Winter 1997 Mr. Douglass starred in “74 Georgia Avenue”, by Murray Schisgal, in which he did a tour-de-force turn, in playing five different characters, in this two-person show at the Group Repertory Theatre, Burbank. 2009/2010 Season finds Mr. Douglass creating a new and innovative, Shakespearean musical comedy Trilogy entitled "A Funkified Shakespearean Trilogy". The show is designed to tour all venues educating and presenting Shakepeare in a down -to-earth and accessible manner. A piece of quality theatre for the entire family. |
